Open-Source means " free" Software. Free in this context means free to distribute, the source codes are also available free for Sotware developers to improve on. Unlike Open-Source Sotware, Proprietary Software owners do not release their source codes to Software Developers.The codes are always kept secret. Open-Source Software is always improving because volunteer developers from all over the world are always looking for short comings in the software to improve upon. No licences are needed and there is no risk of  court cases.
